Ben Terry Overseas

I arrived 8.30 Tuesday evening after not having any trouble through Hong Kong, Heathrow, Amsterdam, Rossendaal and finally Eseen Belgium.

Wednesday I just got the feel of the place and went to a vaulting lesson with Penny and Johans daughter Thalia.

It snowed from then on until yesterday, a bit of a shock.  There are about 20 in work with about half being PSG to GP along with a finalist from the World Young Horse 6yo Champs this year and some just starting off, so a pretty good mix really.

Johan and Penny are super, it is just like having a second family they have 2 young children and 3 other staff from all over the world.

I got to ride from the start ( how lucky was that) and have a favourite already, Kondor a GP horse who is giving me a great ride. I attached a couple of photos.

Cheers Ben

Latest Update 5th January 2009

Hello everyone

Just an update on what ive been doing in the 2nd month in Belgium.

The trip to Ankys was amazing but you soon settle back into the routine at “La Fazenda” . The horses headed by  Verdi de la Fazenda (complete with Hamag number holders), competed at a local competitions for solid wins this gave me my first look at competition warm ups which along with starting the younger horses is something I really wanted concentrate on.

Between Xmas and New years I went to Jumping – Mechelen it was 5 days of Equestrian sport with prize money over 460,000 euro ,  the PSG was won by the Dutch Rider Hans Peter MINDERHOUD on an amazing Jazz Stallion IPS Tango with Julie DE DEKEN and Fazzino second and  Anky Van GRUNSVEN  third on Nelson and  I haven’t seen anything like it in my life.  The GP was won by another super Jazz horse the gelding of  Adelinde CORNELISSEN, Parzival. Second was Anky VAN GRUNSVEN and Painted Black and third was  the PSG winning rider Hans Peter MINDERHOUD on EXQUIS NADINE which made it a clean sweep for the Dutch.  The winners both being by Jazz caught my attention as there is a very nice Jazz gelding waiting for me at home.

I didn’t get the white xmas i was hoping for but I have had plenty of snow  on other days that’s for sure.  Xmas day was amazing with Johan, Penny and Sjef making it a real family xmas for all who are so far away from home..we have a Canadian and Israeli working here also. I have been getting a little more game when it comes to traveling around on days off, and I will probably have Antwerpen mastered by the time I come home.

Now Coming home is the big news,  my return has been delayed  with the aim of me competing  in the Belgium Winter Series. I was speechless when Penny made the suggestion and I couldn’t get on the phone to home quick enough to see if I could stay and flights etc could be changed.  This of course causes me to miss comps at home  and puts the timetable of some horses return back somewhat, but when all this was weighed up the opportunity to compete in a European Series won.  I want to thank those owners who have horses booked in for being so flexible in allowing me to stay.

Ive attached photos, Antwerpen, La Fazenda, Anky and Painted Black in the GP at Mechelen, The arena in Mechelen with its xmas trees hanging from the ceiling and Anky and Nelson in the PSG, these should be all in order but it won’t be hard to work out

Well that’s all the news for now

Cheers from Ben

Malta Equestrian Federation Request

I am writing to the EFA in each state in the hope that you might be able to assist.

Mr Ronald Gaerty, President of the Malta Equestrian Federation, has notified the Maltese Consulate-General in Victoria that the MEF “is currently trying to identify riders living in other countries and who qualify to ride for the Maltese colours. For this reason we are soliciting your help in trying to identify such athletes living in Australia.... Equestrian sport is very competitive and restrictive in the sense that only some make it to the very top. Many other good riders are left out in the cold. It is this segment we are after. We feel that we can offer such riders the opportunity whilst getting dignified representation in return”.

Eligible riders would need to have at least one parent or grandparent who was born in Malta.  Malta has broadened its eligibility requirements for overseas sports participants in recent years, with the result being that several Maltese Australians have represented Malta in many recent international competitions, including the Commonwealth Games, the Olympic Games, and the Games of the Small States of Europe.  I think you would agree that this represents a wonderful opportunity for Maltese Australians to gain international equestrian experience.

I would be grateful if you could pass on this information by any means at your disposal, such as your website, or newsletter.  Please ask any interested eligible equestrians to contact me, and I will pass on their details to the Consul-General.  If they have any questions my contact details are:

Mastersgames- Extension on Entry Date

Extension on Entry Date

Because so many people are still just finding out about the Masters Games equestrian events, we asked the Games office and they agreed that we can extend the entry date to read that the closing date for the equestrian (non Carriage Driving) is now  16/1/09.

So if you haven't entered you still have time.

The Equestrian sections of the Games information can be found on the EFA Victorian website. www.efavic.com.au

There are five sections, show horse, dressage combined training showjumping and working horses and there will be a great welcoming party on the night before events start.

You can enter every class in any three sections for the one entry fee.

Age grouping is 30 to 40. over 40 and up to 50 over 50 and up to 60 and over 60. There are levels to cater for the beginner right through to ex Olympians, so there's no need to be intimidated. There are classes to suit everyone.
