EA advises caution against the use of herbal or natural medicinal products

Equestrian Australia (EA) advises members, horse trainers, owners, exhibitors, riders and their veterinarians to use caution with the administration of herbal or natural medicinal preparations, tonics, pastes, powders, and products of any kind as they might contain a prohibited substance.

The use of so-called herbal and natural products in a horse might result in an adverse analytical finding that constitutes a contravention of the FEI/EA Equine Anti-Doping & Medication Control Rules.

The classification of many of these substances as prohibited is neither a new policy nor a recent development. Herbal and natural medicinal products are classified as prohibited because of their potential actions on various body systems when administered.

Scope of Advice
Herbal or natural medicine preparations include those used either intravenously, topically, intramuscularly, subcutaneously or orally and products where the ingredients and their quantitative analysis are not specifically known. This advice should also be applied to the use of homeopathic remedies.
Persons Responsible should be aware that ingredients labelling for such preparations is often not complete or accurate.
This is especially true of those products containing plant ingredients. The plant origin of any herbal or natural medicine ingredient does not preclude it from containing a pharmacologically potent and readily detectable prohibited substance.
Just some of the examples of the hundreds and perhaps thousands of herbal/natural or plant ingredients that would cause a product to be classified as prohibited are: valerian, kava, passionflower, skullcap, chamomile, vervain, lemon balm, leopard's bane, night shade, capsaicin, comfrey, devil's claw, hops, laurel, lavender, red poppy, and rauwolfia, not to mention tea, coffee, chocolate and Coco Cola! Many prohibited substances have their origin in plants (e.g. salicylates, digitalis, reserpine, caffeine, atropine)
Especially problematic are preparations that are claimed to calm or relax while at the same time being said to contain no prohibited substances. The use of any herbal or natural product to affect the performance of a horse in a calming (tranquillising) or an energising (stimulant) manner is expressly prohibited by the FEI and EA Anti-Doping Rules. The use of a calming product during competition may also have important safety consequences.
Herbs and plant extracts are also marketed as horse feed supplements. Many herb products are marketed as sedatives. While many herbs are generally regarded as safe to feed to horses, there is a scarcity of independent scientific data in horses on the safety and efficacy of most herbal products and supplements. Most of the information available on these products is anecdotal.
In addition, the levels of the natural constituents in herbs can vary greatly as a result of the parts of the plant harvested, the growth stage of the plant at harvest, and the processing methods. Herbs may also contain chemicals that can be harmful, such as certain alkaloids. Toxicities have been associated with comfrey and chaparral in humans, and horsetail and snakeroot are known to be toxic to horses.

Manufacturers' Claims
Persons Responsible should be most careful about any claims by manufacturers or others that their preparations are "legal" or permissible for use at competitions recognized by EA or the FEI.
The FEI and EA do not test or approve herbal or natural products to verify a possible violation of the FEI/EA Anti-Doping Rules. Therefore, a claim that the product does not violate FEI/EA rules or is undetectable by drug testing is the sole responsibility of the manufacturer or individual making such a claim.
Further, persons administering herbal or natural product to a horse for health reasons or to improve its performance might have been misled, having been comforted by claims that the plant origin of its ingredients cause it to be permitted by the rules as well as being undetectable in doping tests.
Although the use of some of these products may not have resulted in adverse analytical findings from medication control tests in the past, this may change as the FEI/EA Drug Testing and Research Laboratories incorporate new methods into their battery of screening tests – this is a deliberate and ongoing process. The analytical techniques used in the testing laboratory are becoming more refined, and the fact that these products have not been detected by testing in the past does not hold any guarantee for their safe use in competition.
It is important to note that many herbal products that are produced for the equine market routinely have their formulations changed without any published notice. It is for this reason that EA typically does not comment on products by name, but requests lists of ingredients. It would be irresponsible for EA to list or name the brand of products as prohibited or permitted as there is often no control or notification of changes in their ingredients.

Summary of Advice
For the above reasons, Equestrian Australia cautions most strongly against any use of herbal and natural products and products, for which the ingredients and properties are not known, in competition horses.
The doping of horses is against the policies of EA and the FEI. Doping is contrary to the spirit of sport. The use of a herbal or natural medicine product in a competition horse is implicitly associated with a desire to affect or improve the normal competition performance of the horse. This desire is at odds with the FEI and EA code of conduct and core values relating to horse welfare and the spirit of the sport.

2009 NSW Championships- Victorian Young Rider Entries

Young Rider Dressage Squad Attendees

Report from Leanne Weston

Chef d'Equipe

It is with pleasure that I am sitting down to write this report as my final responsibility in the position as Chef d'Equipe for the 2009 Equestrian Australia Young Rider Australian Dressage Championships  at SIEC, NSW from  July 23 -26th.

There were 150 horses competing at the Championships.  Riders aged from 10 to 21 years competed on ponies and horses in competitions ranging from Preliminary to FEI level including Freestyle to music. NSW had the largest representation of riders. Other competitors travelled from QLD, VIC, SA, ACT and WA. A senior FEI competition at Prix St Georges & Grand Prix level was also held in conjunction with the event.

Equestrian Victoria was represented by 6 riders competing on 7 horses. Our aim as a team was to ride well, gain percentages above 60%, support each other and enjoy the total experience. From my perspective the riders exceeded the goals set and are to be congratulated on their outstanding performances, their focus, their energy and their spirit.

In the four days of competition, the 6 riders competed in 37 tests and on 32 occasions they finished in the top ten of their class. They presented themselves to each test on time, warmed up and looking immaculate. Across what could only be described as a very busy competition schedule, each rider maintained their composure, especially when their horses and they themselves began to tire. There was not one frown or frustration to be seen and not one cross word to be heard.

At this point I would like to note that all six riders are members of the HAMAG Equestrian Victoria Young Dressage Rider Squad, with some riders having been members for up to 7 years. At squad training days not only are riders provided with excellent dressage coaching, but sessions also focusing on handling themselves when under pressure and on rider etiquette toward the judges, stewards and the organising committee. The conduct of all 6 riders at the championships was a credit to the benefits to be gained from the total EV HAMAG YR program. All riders were able to handle the pressure of competing in the National Championships at SIEC with ease.  They supported each other by ensuring they gathered outside competition rings to watch each other's tests and they even found time to pencil, marshal and collect tests each day. When they faced small riding or technical problems in tests, they could be heard discussing solutions with each other e.g. "try holding more outside rein", "maybe shorten his frame".  In short, their team spirit was sensational.

EQUESTRIAN VICTORIA RIDERS

Brianna Basile

At 12 years of age, Brianna was the youngest member of the team and competed her super little bay pony, Carisma Park Jasmine at preliminary and novice levels. She handled the new movements in the novice tests perfectly and proved herself to be a talented dressage rider. As her results listed below show, Brianna had a wonderful competition with the highlight being achieving Reserve Champion Preliminary Pony. As a team member Brianna was always there to help and cheer for her Victorian team mates.

Emma competed her pony View Bank Boyd at novice, elementary and FEI Pony Preliminary levels. Her results were excellent, performing at the high standard that we have come to expect of this combination. Her tests were consistently accurate and very well ridden. She really showed the talents of her pony when it came to the extensions in each test. Her Reserve Champion Novice Pony award was well deserved. As a team member, Emma mixed well with all. She has maturity beyond her years and thoroughly enjoyed the company of all.

Nicole Touzel

Nicole competed two horses at the championships. Northern Tarpia 11 strutted his stuff in medium, advanced and FEI Junior levels and her young horse Marzel Welttroon performed like a seasoned campaigner (at three years of age), at preliminary and novice levels. Nicole would have to be one of the most energetic riders you could find. She competed in 12 tests in four days and executed each one to perfection. Her accuracy is amazing. In selecting a highlight for Nicole it would be a fine line between her 3rd place in the Novice freestyle in a very strong field of horses or her winning ride in the Advanced freestyle.

Ben had a wonderful championship. He competed his horse Arcencell Isle at elementary, medium and FEI Junior levels. His first test was very good, and as he proceeded through the competition he got better and better. He would carefully read the judge's comments and take on board advice given. Ben became known amongst our team as "The Music Man". If you read his freestyle results below you will realise why. Ben was a fabulous team member who willing supported and helped everyone out, wherever and whenever he could; nothing was ever too much trouble.

John arrived to the competition on Friday. He traveled from Queensland and competed his horse Jayay Grand Marnier at medium level. Although arriving a little later, he quickly joined up with his Victorian team members, supporting all with his positive comments and knowledge.  As his performances listed below show, John did not let the team down. His freestyle was executed with inspiring precision and the ring craft he displayed in all tests was a lesson for all. Well done John.

After planning to attend SIEC last year, but having to scratch, Emmalee made the trip this year and had a wonderful time. She competed her horse Ridermark Amore at Advanced and FEI levels. From the very outset Emmalee rode each test with focus and confidence. Her results were excellent, placing in all tests. The highlight would have to be her 2nd place in the FEI Young Rider Individual test, where she was in a field of many imported horses and handled the pressure perfectly. She quietly supported all other team members, particularly when it came to suggestions for their freestyles.

For those who have been to SIEC be reassured that the facilities and venue are as good as ever. Everything from the stabling, to the arenas, to the riders retreat made for a very pleasant stay and also allowed for a good social time to be had by all families that accompanied the riders. We ate meals together and made time to sit and chat each day. We got to know riders and families from other states which added to the great time we had.

Overall it was a wonderful competition. Equestrian Victoria can be assured that the team of 6 Victorian competitors represented their state proudly. At all times their conduct was respectful towards the organisers, officials, competitors, their families, their horses and themselves. It was an honour to be their

Chef d'Equipe and I thank them all sincerely.
